Big Questions:
What is education? What is the purpose of Education? How should we as a society educate? How should we change our schools/society so we can educate 'better'? What is the difference between training and education?
Contrasting Views on Education:
1. Student decides what to learn vs. Teacher/Parent/Government/Business/Religious Institution/Voters/Experts decide what is taught
2. Education is meant to help the student fit into the world as it is vs. Education is meant to help the student see what is wrong with the world and change it so that the lives of all are improved
3. Education is meant to get you a job vs. education is meant to help you become a more open-minded thinker who pursues interests you enjoy
4. Education is an open-ended process; we are always questioning what education should be vs. we know what education is and we just need to apply our knowledge to best educate everyone.
5. Education happens in schools vs. education is an ongoing endeavour; you learn from movies, sports activities, work and advertising. You cannot avoid learning something and being influenced by 'educational' experiences.

1. Read and analyze an editorial/expository text on the purpose of education and/or how to educate. Communicate your findings by writing a summary and written statement on what you believe the significance or main idea of the text is. Make explicit reference to the theories of education studied in class when you analyze the text.

2. Write a 500-750 word essay on what education is/should be. Include a contrasting view. Research and use proper citation. Grading will be conducted on process and steps (i.e. analysis and synthesis of ideas, creation of thesis and outline, creation of finished product).
