Personal Identity
de Beauvoir; Sartre; Camus
de Beauvoir; Sartre; Camus
Big Idea:
People make their own history [and create their own identity and give their life meaning], but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living. - Karl Max
Who we are and what we do is influenced by circumstances which we recreate (and thus can change).

Prisoners' DilemmaRules
1. Play 10 rounds. 2. If anyone has more than 100 years time, they are automatically executed. 3. The team with the most years at the end of the time is executed, and the team with the least is given 5 pieces of candy. 4. If everyone has the same amount of time in jail, everyone gets one piece of candy. Questions: 1. How do you think the context influenced your decision? 2. How does this relate (or not) to real life? |
