Reasons for Canadian Confederation

Reasons for Confederation #1 - Political deadlock (Affects Can. West and Can. East)

Reason for confederation #2 - Britain wanted her colonies to be more self-sufficient.

Britain removed her troops from BNA and abolished the corn laws.

To protect their borders from the US and make sure they could sell their goods, the BNA colonies joined together (confederation).

The repeal of the corn laws favoured the factory owners rather than the aristocracy in Britain. This was because the aristocracy received more money if the price of wheat was high (because they owned the land on which the wheat was made). The factory owners wanted a lower price for wheat so that they could pay their workers less (they could pay the workers less because the price of bread would be lower and so the workers could live on lower wages).

Reason #3 Repeal of Reciprocity Treaty

With the cancelation of free trade with the US, BNA colonies decided to join together and reduce tariffs so they could better trade with each other. The reduction of tariffs between the colonies was a result of confederation!

Reason for confederation #4

If Canada confederated they could then take over Rupert's land (i.e. expand westward into what is today Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC). Shortly after confederation Great Britain passed the Rupert's land act which allowed Canada to buy Rupert's land (most of it) from the Hudson's Bay Company (the store with those expensive white blankets with coloured stripes). Confederation helped Canada colonize what is today the western part of Canada (e.g. Manitoba, Nunavut, NWT, Yukon, Sask, Alberta and the northern part of BC).

Reason for confederation  #5 [Railroads]
Canadian confederation made it easier to build railroads and gave more reasons for the building of railroads (e.g. more internal trade and westward expansion). The railroads were used to ship troops, goods and settlers.

Reason for confederation #6
The creation of the North-West Mounted Police. With a security force, it was easier to colonize western Canada, carry out the government of Canada's wishes and keep law and order there, which included monitoring the border with the US.

Reason for confederation #7
The Fenian attacks. If Canada confederated they could better repel the Fenians.

Reason for confederation #8
USA wanted to expand to BNA - Manifest Destiny, Anger at Britain over their continued trading with the South during the US civil war. If Canada confederated they could better repel the Americans desire to take over all of the Americas.

Confederation Photoshop Poster Presentation Structure

1. State the reason for confederation, explain the reason and how you showed it through your artwork.

2. State how confederation was a solution to a problem or how some factor made confederation possible (e.g. state how confederation would solve the problem of political deadlock or how the building of the railways made it more feasible for Canada to confederate)

3. Note who was included and left out of deciding the outcome of Confederation. State who the winners and losers were (who did confederation help and who did it hurt or not help?)
