The Machine Stops
The Machine Stops explores our relationship with the Earth, other people, our creations and self. The author is concerned that our creations (machines and machine-type thinking) have destroyed our relationship with the Earth, others and ourselves. Everything and everyone is valued only based on how it and they fit the machine's needs; the machine is the measure! There is only one mindset and way of life -- the machine's.

The Ones who Walk away from Omelas
A child is the means for others' happiness.
The story gets you to think about our relationship with other people and what kind of society we should create. It does this by making the way in which the child causes the happiness of others unclear.
This story can relate to colonization, child labour and a 'machine' thinking that wants to maximize happiness but does not care about individuals.
It is critical of utilitarianism -- a philosophy that argues we should set up our society to maximize utility (i.e. happiness).
